Link

It is not known if Link is truly the blood descendant of the Hero of Time, but it is known that he carries within him the power of the Triforce of Courage.

The story of The Wind Waker starts on Outset Island, a small and relatively isolated island south of the Great Sea. On the day of Link's coming of age ceremony (spent dressed as the legendary hero himself), the pirate Tetra gets kidnapped by a mysterious bird.

Link saves her before her shipmates can get to her, but as Aryll, Link's sister, goes to meet Link, she is also taken by the mysterious bird. She is taken far, far away, and Link makes it his mission to save her.

Little does he know how much his and Tetra's destiny are intertwined until after he saves his sister...

Aryll

Aryll, the loving sister, gives her big brother a telescope as a temporary birthday present. When he looks through it, he unwittingly sparks a chain of events that would see him become the next Hero. Aryll follows her brother on his rescue mission, only to be snatched away by a monsterous bird with huge talons.

Upset and confused, Aryll rocks back and forth in her cold cell, knees tucked under chin, half-listening to the stories of the girls from Windfall Island. She can only wait for her heroic brother to come and save her.

Tetra

A fearless, even merciless pirate, Tetra initially seems cold and self-interested. There's more to this character than even she knows.

Though initially frosty towards Link, she begins warming to him when he shows the adventurous heart of a pirate.

Zelda

A fair-skinned young lady, Zelda is bold of heart and adventurous. A descendant of the Royal Family, Zelda does not know of her ancestors, or even of her true identity until later on in her adventure.

Ganondorf

Once locked away in the Sacred Realm, Ganondorf broke free and tried to take Hyrule once again. The armies of Hyrule were powerless before him, and the Hero of Time was no where to be seen. The Gods of Hyrule buried the world under the Great Sea, Ganondorf with it. Now, evil forces have been gathering near Forsaken Fortress and it is believed that the Evil King has returned.

It is in Forsaken Fortress that Ganondorf slowly recovers his health, until he is strong enough to once again pursue the Triforce.

King of Red Lions

Tetra and Link do not find out the true identity of the King of Red Lions until later on in his adventure. However, the talking boat has a lot of faith that Link is the new Hero, and will save Hyrule from the growing forces of Ganondorf.

The King gives Link advice throughout the adventure, and acts as Link's boat.

Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule

The King of the lost kingdom of Hyrule, Daphnes Nohansen has been trapped in the Temple of Time since the Gods flooded the world. Now, with the arrival of the new Hero, he can finish his job of making sure that Hyrule is left in safe hands. He is the one to tell Link and Zelda of their heritage, and tells them that the Great Sea is their new Hyrule, one that they must rebuild and claim as their own.

Grandmother

The Pirates

A worried old lady who loves her grandchildren dearly, Link's Grandmother gives him the Hylian Shield that has been past on down the generations. It is said to have been owned by the Legendary Hero himself, bringing speculation that Link has more in common with the Hero of Time than just being his successor.
Tetra is the leader of this band of crazy pirates. Once they meet young Link they grudgingly set out on a path of selflessness. It is the same path that reveals the future Princess Zelda...

Jabun

Valoo

Jabun is the legendary God of the Sea, who made good friends with the King of Hyrule during the decline of Hyrule. The Zora used to look after him, but when they begun to leave Zora's Domain, it was up to the King to make sure that Jabun was safe. Now, the King comes to him for help saving Hyrule as the evil King Ganondorf returns...
The God of the Sky, Valoo, grants wings to the people of the Rito tribe and protects them. He resides on top of Death Mountain but early on in Link's adventure it turns out that the evil parasite Gohma has reappeared, causing Valoo great pain. Until Link can exterminate the pest, Valoo may seem to be troubled for much longer, leaving the Rito exposed.

Zephos and Cyclos

Great Deku Tree

The Gods of Wind, Zephos and Cyclos are brothers who have fallen out after the shrine of Cyclos was destroyed. Cyclos causes trouble at sea with ravaging Cyclones, but with a little help from Link, the two soon make amends.
The descendant of the first Great Deku Tree, his son now protects over the Koroks in the Forest Haven. He is very wise, having seen the great flood and the fall of Ganon.

Quill

Lenzo

Quill is a fairly wise, if a little irritable, Rito postman who spends his time taking letters across the Great Sea. He becomes a trusted companion to Link throughout this journey, offering some vital advice.
Lenzo is an inventor, but so interested in his PictoBox invention that he strives to make it even better! The only man who can claim to have made both a black and white, and a colour PictoBox, Lenzo also happens to be an expert photographer.

Makar

Fado

Makar is a troublesome, yet talented Korok. He writes a song each year for the Korok's ceremony, but it turns out that fate holds much more for him once Link appears in his life.
Fado is the successor to Saria, and was once Sage of the Wind, last of the Kokiri.  Unfortunately, Ganondorf killed Fado leaving only his soul, and it is this that passes the duty of being a sage on to young Makar.

Medli

Laruto

When Link meets her, Medli is training to be the next Rito translator between Valoo and the Rito tribe. She believes that this will give her life a purpose, but after meeting Link, her life has more purpose than she could have imagined.   Laruto, the descendant of Ruto, is the Sage of Earth and like Fado was murdered by Ganondorf. Her soul stays around long enough to pass down the duty of being a Sage to Medli.

Chieftan and Komali

Tingle

The Chieftain is a good leader for the Rito, however his son Komali doesn't display any leadership qualities. He's but young, and with Link's help, he soon matures.
Tingle is the strangest fairy.  Aside from his bizarre songs, weird sayings, authoritarian island and enslaved siblings, he's very good at reading maps. He'll decipher ancient maps for Link, but for a hefty sum.

Orca

Sturgen

Orca is the one swordsman left in Hyrule since the days of the Hero and the Hyrulian Royal Guards. It is him who teaches Link the basics and advanced techniques of using a sword. His brother is the wise Sturgen but they couldn't be more different.   The very knowledgeable Sturgen loves nothing more that reading a good book and researching the mysterious kingdom of Hyrule. He teaches Link about the Great Seas.

Beedle

Merman

Beedle is the most successful businessman on the Great Sea, because everywhere you go the Ship Shop seems to be! He runs reward schemes and will buy items from you, too.   The Mermen are bizzare fish who live all over the Great Sea. They're excellent at drawing maps, but they can't work on an empty stomach! They've been known to suffer from aching joints.
