When I first heard that
Twilight Princess was
being released on both
Wii and GameCube, I will
admit to being a tad
annoyed. After all, they
promised from day one of
the game’s announcement
back in 2004 that the
game would be on the
GameCube and not on the
Wii (which was then
known simply as
“Revolution”). Over
time, of course, I
rationalized this
announcement.
Really, it makes very
good business sense. TP
is perhaps the most
anticipated game of this
console generation, if
not of all time. Having
it as the centrepiece
for the new and
different system is a
brilliant move. And
since they also released
it for the GameCube,
they not only half kept
their promise to release
it only on that system,
but also helped out
those of us whose
wallets aren’t big
enough to afford a Wii
until we get Christmas
money.
So, yay, the Sponge gets
his TP without having to
spend $300.
A day or so ago, it was
then announced that the
Wii TP (a phrase which
sounds really bad,
incidentally) would
feature a right-handed
Link. Again there was
annoyance, followed by
rationalization.
“What?! Link is, and
always should be,
left-handed, dagflabbit!!”
was followed soon after
by “Well, I suppose that
makes sense…wouldn’t
want us righties
awkwardly using the main
weapon of the game.”
So, yay, if the Sponge
ever decides to get both
versions, I don’t have
to learn how to fence
left-handed or mirrored.
All was well with the
world, really. And then
I got the call from the
GameStop computer, which
is apparently dubbed
Aeris. I was briefly
confused as to why a
dead Final Fantasy
character would be
calling me, but the she
announced the whole
GameStop thing and I got
all excited.
Aeris proceeded to tell
me that the Wii version
of TP would be released
on November 19th.
“Sweet!” I yelled into
her ear. If I could have
reached through the cell
tower and planted a big
sloppy kiss on her
speaker you bet I would
have.
But then my new love let
me down. “The Legend of
Zelda: Twilight Princess
for the GameCube will be
released on December
11th.”
“What?!?!” I yelled,
followed by numerous
expletives aimed at who
I at first thought to be
a poor messenger girl.
Then the big meany made
things worse when she
told me I had the
GameCube version
reserved with a good
healthy slathering of
contempt in her voice.
No, seriously. She was a
bitch about it. But her
voice certainly cheered
up when she told me I
could change my
reservation from one
system to the other.
Yeah…thanks.
So now, for the first
time in – well, in ever,
really – I am really
steamed at Nintendo. And
I’m sorry Big N, but I
don’t think I can
possibly rationalize
this one. I’m pretty
sure they said that both
versions would be
released on the same
date. So that’s twice
they’ve lied to me. I
know things change over
time, so don’t give me
that BS. It’s the
principal of the thing
at this point.
Plus here I am, newly
rehired to work for a
Legend of Zelda website,
and I have to wait 22
extra days before I can
do anything for the new
game. Not only that, but
I’ll probably have to
spent those 22 days
ignoring the Internet as
much as possible.
Because you know as soon
as the game comes out
there will be news and
info and spoilerific
updates on all but 3
websites across the
entire World Wide Web.
And I know those
websites will be Martha
Stewart’s, a website
devoted to an alien from
Halo, and the Ford
Model-T fansite.
So, yeah, thanks
Nintendo. I have to
spend 22 days as either
a hermit, seeing what
the Martha is up to,
viewing info on one
alien from a game I’m
not particularly fond
of, or reading the
ravings about a car that
hasn’t been made in over
a century. Thanks
bunches.
The Sponge is
displeased.
