In 2003, Nintendo
released a port of the
SNES classic A Link to
the Past on Game Boy
Advance. As with their
Super Mario Advance
ports, they felt the
need to add value to the
cartridge by adding a
multiplayer component,
but unlike the Mario
ports, this game was
original, with new
assets and game-styles.
Four Swords was
developed by Capcom
development team
Flagship who had
previously created the
Oracle games for Game
Boy Color.
In Four Swords, an
ancient wizard named
Vaati has returned after
being banished centuries
ago by the Hero (using
the conveniently-named
Four Sword). This sword
has the power to split
its bearer into four,
and this translates into
a four-player Zelda
quest where players
cooperate to kill
enemies and compete to
gain rupees, making for
a frantic love-hate
experience. The game's
graphical style is based
on that of The Wind
Waker, trying to emulate
its super-deformed cel-shaded
style using sprites.
Achievements in A Link
to the Past will
translate into powers
gained in Four Swords,
and if you finish both
games a new dungeon
opens in A Link to the
Past.
