Overview

During the late 1980s, Nintendo released a series of primitive handheld systems called Game and Watch. They were simple LCD games featuring classic characters like Mario and Donkey Kong, and they tried to emulate the gameplay experiences found in the arcade or on the NES. Most cases had subtle differences in control or design, but the most distinctive alteration was the dual-screen design that later inspired the Nintendo DS. The flagship title for the dual-screen Game and Watch consoles was The Legend of Zelda. In the game, the Triforce had been split into 8 pieces, and as Link, you were to find them all. Being a simple game, the graphics were crude, the control unresponsive, but the game remained compelling. In the late 1990's, Nintendo re-released eleven Game and Watch games in the form of smaller Mini Classics.
