There were two Zelda
games made for the
SNES's Satellaview
add-on. The first was a
Legend of Zelda remake
using upgraded graphics,
and the second was
called The Ancient
Stone, which was
basically an episodic A
Link to the Past. These
games were broadcast to
your SNES using the
Satellaview, which cost
$150. In conjunction
with a cartridge holding
some Flash ROM, the
console would download
the levels, though the
loading times were
really long; 9 minutes
just for one dungeon,
each dungeon being
available for just an
hour a week.
In the remake of The
Legend of Zelda, you
played as Satellaview's
nameless mascot, who was
some kid with a baseball
cap. There was no
overworld, so you only
had to deal with the
dungeons, but there were
some subtle yet
fundamental changes for
those who had finished
the original. For
instance, the first
dungeon had a different
layout, and instead of a
bow, you'd receive a
boomerang. So maybe not
so subtle.
The Satellaview's life
came to an end fairly
swiftly, mainly because
the technology was so
ahead of its time as to
be unwieldy. A little
like with the N64DD,
this left many users in
the dark and without
fresh content to play. |
