Nintendo Responds to Smash Lag: “La La La Can’t Hear You”

Tuesday 18th March

If you’ve been playing Smash Bros. Brawl online over the past few days you may have encountered an unacceptable amount of lag. I wouldn’t know, because I live in Europe and thus Nintendo hates me. Gaming news site Kombo contacted Nintendo for an official statement, and they replied; “As with the launch of any online-enabled game, especially one as popular as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, everyone wants to play at once. This puts a strain on the pipeline. We have seen improvements in online play performance every day since launch.”

Paraphrased, as less people try to play at once, performance will increase. Good to be pro-active!

Hello Hello

Tuesday 18th March

Hello. My name is Nexus Zero and I am a procrastoholic. Even by writing the following post about the future of the website I am procrastinating, sitting here at my desk with other people’s websites to finish and instead bunking off to write for my own.

So what’s going on? Well, not a lot, by virtue of my laziness. But, as is tradition here at Zelda Elements, we’re currently in one of those “upswing downswing” cycles where the motivation to do anything productive eeks in and out over the course of months (this is actually demonstratable: look at the numbers on this page). I have the feeling that we’re about to hit an upswing.

As you may have read, we’re the fourth site to have been announced as part of the Zelda Dungeon Alliance. This will come as a shock to long-time readers; we generally don’t sign up to this sort of thing partially because they serve no useful purpose and partially because they don’t appeal directly to my ego or my delusions of a Zelda fan site empire headed by, of course, me. Well, this alliance is different.

Members of the ZDA have been hand-picked by Mases, who has specifically chosen a diverse set of sites who each bring something different to the group. For instance, sites announced so far include fan-game HQ Zelda Classic, companion PureZC, and fan work legends North Castle. “But Nexus,” you cry, “Zelda Elements is the most generic of all these fan sites! It is the pinnacle of a standard, game-based, news-driven fan site!” Well yes, you’re right, we are quite generic, but you have my thanks in referring to us as the “pinnacle.” I mean, that’s very generous of you but really, you’re being too kind.

Haw haw.

So joking aside, how do we fit in? Well, we’re going to go to extra lengths to make sure that we are the site for Zelda news. Espy, linkthewarrior and myself will carry on doing our thang like a chicken wang (oh lord), becoming the GoNintendo of Zelda sites. There will be a renewed effort to bring you the best Editorials and Features that will deviate from our usual “Zelda-only” template, discussing anything we think a Zelda fan will find interesting, hopefully encouraging a Nintendo-loyal readership to sail to shores unknown. Evil Sponge will continue to provide high-quality game help for the latest Zelda games.

In the longer term, I have plans in place for a site revamp that takes its cue from a herbally-induced vision I had a month ago for a radical new site design, something never seen before, at least not in any kind of fansite community. All I need first are my props…

However, this all raises some interesting questions about the future of the site, and this is where you come in (presuming you’ve made it this far). In the interests of cutting the wheat from the chaff, something I’ve always been a huge proponent of, should we remove our Fan Works and leave that to North Castle? And what are your thoughts on our direction? This site wouldn’t exist without readers, so it’s important you make yourselves heard! Equally, any of this sounds interesting or exciting to you, and you’re a good writer who wants ‘in’, please contact us.

Reggie: “Big Game” at E3

Sunday 16th March

Nintendo head, Reggie Fils-Aime, recently hinted in an interview to GameTrailers that at this year’s E3 (the not-so-large-as-previous-years-but-still-pretty-large games expo) there will be an unveiling of a “big game”.

“There’s gonna be a big game for the holiday that the gamers will want. All I can tell you is what we announce during E3 is gonna be fantastic. The gamer is gonna be excited and the expanded audience is gonna be excited.”

Could this big game possibly be Zelda-related? Personally, I’d guess it would be just a tad too soon for us to expect an announcement for the next “proper” Zelda game, but I may well be wrong. This is undoubtedly exciting news for Nintendo fans, regardless.

News Archives Returns

Thursday 13th March

A benefit of switching to WordPress is that we can automatically bring back the sorely-missed News Archive. Now, rather than battling with abstract pagination you can browse news by date and category, or alternatively using the search function.

Comments Back Online

Wednesday 12th March

Comments are now back online after I moved everything over to WordPress from CuteNews, meaning that things aren’t liable to break every other week. Hot stuff! Also, each news article is categorized and tagged, meaning you can click things and other relevant things will present themselves to you in an organised manner. This is excellent news! Excellent. Let’s dance.

Multiplayer Ocarina of Time Mod

Wednesday 12th March

Gowans007 has posted a thread at the criminally misunderstood NeoGAF about an effort to mod Ocarina of Time to allow multiple simultaneous players. An early video of this can be seen at MetaCafe which shows a buggy yet impressive implementation. Currently the mod supports Dark Link vs Link deathmatch, and the mod’s creator Cen is hoping to incorporate a fully-fledged split-screen co-op mode. - - - -.

We will be updating you on any further developments, because we’re really kind and in no way conceited, but you can check out Cen’s original thread here.

Smash Bros: Brawl is finally upon us (Americans)

Sunday 9th March

Today marks the US release of Super Smash Bros: Brawl for Wii. If you’ve been living under an e-rock for the past couple of years, Brawl is a 2D fighter featuring Nintendo all-stars. Of course, there is a huge amount of Zelda characters, stages and content, so if you’re a fan, you should definitely check it out. And be sure to join our forums, as we will no doubt be hosting online tournaments and stage creation competitions!

PH - Boss Guide
PH - Collections
PH - Items

Hello again.  I’ve actually had these done for awhile, but my site access mysteriously vanished.  And then Nexus was apparently locked out of his email.  So, all in all, not a good series of events for the updates.  But, at least we have some now.  Sure, we’re not the first like we were with WW or TP…but we create our updates with love, dagnabbit (and with just a dash of paprika for flavor, and some cinnamon for texture, and some Sigur Ros for ambiance).

More is on the way.  I’m still involved in many a project, but when am I not?  On the other hand, I don’t have to write any more music for another month or two…and even at that I won’t be worrying about the visual package.  So, hopefully, I’ll be able to get  back to this slowly but surely.  Meanwhile, enjoy the updates!

LOOKING FOR A REAL LIFE LINK TO RETURN MASTER SWORD TO ITS PEDESTAL

Friday 29th February

Zelda Legends has found this strange advert by a girl on Craigslist calling for guys who “look like Link, from the game.” Claiming to look like Zelda, she’s posted a cosplay shot of herself in a moderately-convincing homemade dress. So if you think you have “the blonde skater cut, and light eyes look” and don’t “have a problem with European culture,” send out the pidgins.
