New Zelda: More of the Same?

Thursday 2nd July

With a lot of people excited for the prospect of the (unconfirmed) use of WiiMotionPlus in the confirmed-but-technically-unannounced upcoming Zelda Wii title, tongues are wagging about the changes that could be made to the Zelda formula. Aside from one – which belongs to Shigeru Miyamoto. In the most recent issue of Nintendo Power, he stated “I don’t think it’s going to be that radically different”.

So there we go. It’ll be Zelda as we know it, with a few tweaks. Much like every other Zelda title since Ocarina of Time. Well, can’t complain with that!

Miyamoto Wanting Fresh Take on Zelda and Mario

Thursday 30th October

In a recent interview with MTV’s gaming blog “MTV Multiplayer”, writer Stephen Totilo got a chance to interview Nintendo’s biggest name, Shigeru Miyamoto. Miyamoto goes on to explain that while the past few Nintendo games have been good, they have been too “conservative”. He explains, “What I’ve been saying to our development teams recently is that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was not a bad game, by any means. But, still, it felt like there was something missing”. I’m sure many of us Zelda fans are ready for a new, fresh, and exciting new design to our favorite game. While Mr. Miyamoto gave no word as to when we could expect any of these fresh new games, we can be sure that they are in the works!

New Zelda for Wii in the Works, DS Too?

Wednesday 16th July

While I don’t think anyone thought otherwise, Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed to IGN that Nintendo’s in-house Zelda team is working on the next Zelda for Wii. While making no official confirmation of a new DS Zelda in the works, he did mention that there are two separate teams working for each platform, implying so.

“The Zelda team in particular always works on Zelda titles. The core members of the Zelda team have for a very long time now been focused on Zelda games, and continue to focus on Zelda games, so they are hard at work and working away. And then, of course, we have the DS Zelda team as well, so even there we’re having some switching of people in and out where the DS team is mixing in with the Wii team and working on the Wii version.”

When asked about what new innovations the next game will hold, his reply seemed to be “A lot, but not too much”.

“I don’t necessarily think it will change that drastically, but I think that Zelda is a franchise that does need some big new unique ideas. And so the team right now is very focused on trying to find those ideas.”

Iwata Asks About Crossbow Training

Friday 9th May

The latest instalment in the “Iwata Asks” interview series on the official Nintendo website, focuses on Link’s Crossbow Training. As he chats to Shigeru Miyamoto about the development process of the game, you’re bound to learn lots about the making of this thrilling instalment in the critically acclaimed Zelda franchise…

…who am I kidding? Did you even buy it? I’ve told you it’s there, I’ve done my part. Read it if you want. It’s actually quite interesting, for what it’s worth.

Shigsy: Zelda Team Working on New Games

Saturday 19th April

In an interview with video game site 1UP, Shigeru Miyamoto made an interesting statement about the status of the “Zelda team” working at Nintendo.

”(…) we do have the existing teams at Nintendo working on the kinds of products we’ve always made over the years. The Zelda team is forming again to work on new games! But to me, it’s about finding these new interactive experiences and bringing them to people.”

Interesting, yet ambiguous. While it’s easy to assume the new games are Zelda games, Shigsy didn’t actually say that. So you could gather from this short quote that the Zelda team are working on something completely new! Though if Shigsy is referring to a Zelda game, this is just another of the many whispers we’ve heard about it – we know it exists, or will exist in the near future, but there’s still no real information about it. The Nintendo Media Summit recently passed without a peep of Zelda. Perhaps at this year’s E3? Stay tuned…

(I apologise for the slightly late arrival of this news nugget – I have spent the last two days of my life starving myself for charity, eating to make up for it, sleeping (because starving yourself leaves you with little energy), then going to a Ceilidh. It’s pronounced “Kayleigh” and is a Scottish dance thing. They’re fun, you should try them.)
